REVISITING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND MATHEMATICS (STM) EDUCATION AS A CATALYST FOR NIGERIAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
PROBLEMS AND WAY FORWARD.
Every government has a deep desire to emerge as a highly developed organization. Such a situation cannot be attained without adequate job creation for the citizens, embodied in self-reliance, entrepreneurial skills and serious campaign for awareness. In addition, a 'stable' Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) education is a sine qua non for an occurrence of sustainable development for Nigeria. With this in mind, this paper attempted to examine theoretically the ways in which proper application of STM education could catalyze sustainable development in Nigeria. A good STM education programme ought to achieve an appreciable national development. However, it is a reality that Nigeria is not developed in spite of the proposals of the successive governments as contained in the National Policy on Education. This implies that Nigerian science education programme is impotent. Factors like: non-usage of researches and reviews, family/gender factors, curriculum, teaching method/evaluation, availability of resources were revisited. A historical overview of STM education was linked to early man's drive to raise his standard of living, using 'minds on' and 'hands on' skills. Finally, ways of ameliorating and reversing the existing trends for a better sustainably developed and democratic Nigeria were recommended.
