EVALUATION OF CAREER CHOICES OF COMPUTER STUDENTS IN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY FIELDS IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES IN RELATION TO EMPLOYABILITY.
The study seeks to evaluate the career choices of computer students in Information and Commutation Technology fields in Nigerian universities in relation to employability. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all the federal universities in Nigeria with a population size of 1680 lecturers and students. The sample size is 400 comprising 70 computer lecturers and 330 computer students of Information and Communication Technology field from all the federal universities in the south-eastern part of Nigeria. The findings revealed that choice areas like Data processing, Database management, computer programming and computer networks are highly offered by a large number of the students while areas like Artificial Intelligence, Computer Information System, Knowledge Engineering and Neural Networks are offered by very few students. Some underlying factors to the IT career choices were identified to be fund, ignorance of nature & cost of programs and institutions offering them and coping phobia. Also, the findings revealed that those areas offered by a large number of students get overcrowded with students resulting in many graduates in the areas being unemployed having only acquired skills in a crowded area of specialization.
